2009 Work

A look back at some of the projects I worked on during 2009: Rock Constructions- identity design & website (www.rockconstructions.co.uk) VN01 Oscillate- limited edition screensaver (www.youtube.com/watch?v=stCiONNuE8Q) Alphabetas- typeface design (3D browser: www.benstevens.co.uk/projects/alphabetas) Freelance projects:: Matt Rowe Music – Flash website development (Agency: Rehabstudio) KangaROOS Global – Flash / Papervision3D website development (Agency: Rehabstudio)

Design in unexpected places

I was fortunate enough to stay in the Maldives in the Indian Ocean over Christmas, a truly unforgettable experience I’m glad I had the chance to do before the islands are inevitably lost to the waves some time this century (a fate shared by similar low-lying islands in the Pacific). During the trip I visited [...]

AlphaBetas

My ‘AlphaBetas’ modular typeface gets it’s own 3-D browser made using Flash and Papervision3D, and it also works with blue/amber 3-D specs. Go to http://www.benstevens.co.uk/projects/alphabetas to play and learn more about how I made it.

Oscillate screensaver available to download

From today, a new clock screensaver is available to download for free from the VectaNecta page on my site. “‘Oscillate’ is a conceptual version of the traditional clock. Visually, it takes the form of a compass where each line represents a quarter of a standard clock face. Three coloured vectors pulse in quick succession [...]

Being Green

Last night I watched a lecture on BBC1 by HRH Prince of Wales where he talked about humanity’s environmental impact and the immediate need to adopt more eco-friendly practices particularly in business. Nothing new, but it got me thinking. Even though my consumption of raw materials and waste is negligible as a digital designer, there [...]

BenStevens.co.uk update June 2009

I’ve just given my site a long overdue makeover. The last major update was about a year ago, and it was starting to look a bit tired and messy. This new look is dead simple, clean, and colourful… and it only took 3 days to bash out. I had spent a couple of weeks on [...]

New Work: Rock Constructions website

Rock Constructions is a stage-set design & construction company based in Lincolnshire, UK. They’ve been making stages since 1979 for concerts, fashion shows, conferences, and many other high-profile events. The new ‘Rock’ identity was designed using a geometric triangular grid to reflect the company’s stage-set construction credentials. The word ‘Constructions’ is typeset in AlphaBetas [...]

New Work: MattRowe-Music.com

New Work: KangaROOS.com goes live

I’ve just finished work on the new KangaROOS Global web site, designed and directed by the guys at Rehabstudio. Being one of the first Flash Papervision3D web sites I’ve developed I’m very happy with how it has turned out. Chances are that if you’ve seen an interactive spin-able 3D globe on the web it’s probably [...]

New Work: Backwater web site

I’ve recently finished a new web site for Backwater Media, which launched earlier today. It’s a simple Flash site but the Backwater guys and I are very pleased with its design and how it compliments their existing branding. Why not take a look at the site and some of the great short films they’ve produced: [...]

Antigua

Last week I arrived home from a fortnight in Antigua in the West Indies/Carribean, and it was without doubt the best vacation I’ve ever been on. Everyone is friendly, the annual Antigua Carnival was sheer technicolor brilliance, and it really is a tropical paradise – epitomised by the neighbouring island of Barbuda.

Freelancing update

It’s approaching two months since I made the decision to become a freelance interactive designer, and so far, touch-wood, there’s been very little to regret. Here’s what I’ve been up to over the last couple of months

New job, new site

There comes a point in every designer’s career when they need to spread their wings and leave the comfort of a safe but uninspiring salaried job in which menial tasks are drip-fed to you on a daily basis.

Work: Cabvision brand refresh

Updated graphics for Cabvision London.

Thanks, D&AD!

It’s always nice to receive unexpected gifts, so I’d like to thank the nice people at D&AD for sending me their 2007 Student Annual. Lots of great work in there by a talented bunch of youngsters. My particular favourites are Nick O’Brien’s “Scream” poster for the London Horror Film Festival, and Marc Pavlovic’s “Oblo” sphere [...]

ColourClock Screensaver

This is an animated clock screensaver I created for Liquid Digital using Flash, inspired by PixelBreaker’s Polar Clock. You can download the screensaver from their blog.

How not to underachieve in 2008

One of the lesser-known curses of being “creative” is that you tend to get creative ideas almost constantly, at any point of day or night, and usually when you’ve got an existing project already on the boil. In the past, most of the ideas I’ve had for potentially interesting projects would have been subject to one of [...]

Have a Sticky Christmas!

Me and my mate Lloyd got a bit bored the other day so we did a bit of stop-frame animation using a fixed camera and a shed-load of sticky Post-It™ Notes! A few hours later, and you can see the result below. Happy Christmas everyone!

HGA site launches

Just finished a Flash web site build for Harveen Gill Associates, launched today.

FF Meta Serif

It’s official: my new favourite typeface is FF Meta Serif. It’s a thing of beauty. Expect to see it featuring in all my work for the next 5-10 years. I wouldn’t normally waste my time writing about a typeface (or watching a film about one for that matter!), but I just feel that when someone [...]

And so it begins…

Recent visitors may be wondering why I ditched the Flash version of my site in favour of this; a rather generic-looking web log. Well, the truth is, I only tend to update my portfolio (that can still be found here) when I feel I’ve produced an outstanding piece of work. So as you could imagine, it doesn’t get [...]
